Macaulay Langstaff's 28th league goal of the season means Colchester are still not safe as they lost at Notts County.

The visitors almost took the lead early on when Ellis Iandolo's speculative effort from distance almost caught Luca Ashby-Hammond off guard, the keeper tipping the ball onto the woodwork.

It was the Colchester full-back involved once again minutes later, producing a last-ditch tackle to deny Langstaff an opportunity to shoot inside the area.

Jodi Jones saw his effort clip off the crossbar, with Cameron McGeehan found unmarked inside the box at the other end but heading straight at Ashby-Hammond.

The hosts continued to create the better chances, as Crowley saw his effort blocked on the line by Riley Harbottle seven minutes after the restart.

But County's pressure would pay two minutes later when good work between Aaron Nemane and Crowley was finished off by Langstaff, putting the ball in off the crossbar.

Harbottle almost secured the away side a point late on as his header came off the post, with Colchester now three points ahead of relegation rivals Sutton who conceded a late equaliser to Crawley.

    Hope you stay up Colchester fans. As a kid I remember Walsall playing Colchester in the early start mid week evenings prior to floodlights. I didn't know where Colchester was so I looked in my atlas at school and it looked miles away as did Ipswich and Norwich. Still got a soft spot for all the old third division south clubs like Colchester, Crewe , Swindon and of course Bournemouth!

    We are so lucky to still be in league football ⚽️ awful season Sutton unlucky today can't see us winning any game this season draw at home to crewe need to invest big next season in players to complete in league football. Up the col u.

    Let's decide this season with a win on Tuesday.. ...staying up on goal difference would be disappointing...tho I'm sure Sutton would take it...Unlucky Sutton really good run of late but a little too late...Would be lovely not to go through this every end of season...U's need to sort their ticket prices out next season...get supporters in-we need bigger crowds...no excuse build the fan-base.

    Celebrate the rare clean sheet,played on the front foot throughout and plenty of attempts,still not convinced of SM,Cowleys don’t change awful pair with their spoiler/bully boy tactics,wouldn’t have them anywhere near our club,total amateurs,credit to the Us following who contributed to the atmosphere. Fantastic attendance yet again we deserved better but for poor recruitment in January who knows

    Great atmosphere created by 765 travelling U’s fans (1,000 at Crawley). However, a leggy, weary, lacklustre performance by the U’s team, perhaps not surprising given the recent punishing schedule resulting from our pitch problems. It’s been a roller coaster journey under the Cowleys, but there is at least now faith, trust and ambition.
